What is a portfolio career?
A portfolio career is a future-proof career
What is a portfolio career?
A portfolio career is made up of different components, rather than just one thing.
As an analogy, a portfolio career is like selecting a number of different dishes, such as Dim Sum or Tapas, rather than choosing one main meal.
So you enjoy different flavours and textures – more variety, and more career fulfilment. And you spread your career risk, rather than having all your ‘career eggs in one basket.’
Common portfolio career combinations are:
- Two or three part time jobs.
- A retainer with one company e.g. two days a week and freelance project work.
- One part time job and freelance work.
- Freelance projects, a part time job, volunteering.
- Two non-executive director positions and a trustee for a charity.
- A 6 month work contract, taking a break to recharge or study for a qualification, then another 6 month contract.
- Evening study, freelance projects and setting up an on-line business from home.

What combination would be your ideal? What is essential when you have a portfolio career is to have in-depth self-awareness, a good high quality network, to look regularly at trends, make time to think, review and plan and to keep on investing in your skills and marketability. You need to have a distinctive and compelling personal brand to pull the different strands together. Ours is The Talent Liberator.
A portfolio career can get very busy so it is vital to start as you mean to go on; set up good systems from the outset, have a good support system around you, both personally and professionally and utilize technology to be as efficient as possible.
